Milo, Otis and friends https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2017/10/milo-otis-and-friends Great session last weekend with Milo and Otis. The skies were threatening but the weather held and we had the full afternoon to play with the dogs in their yard.

We were also joined by cousins Poppy and Barclay, two energetic Sheep Dogs who love to chase the young Otis just about everywhere.

Thanks to Melissa and family for a wonderful afternoon!

Carlota Galgos Rescue Canada Fundraising Picnic https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2017/8/carlota-galgos-rescue-canada-fundraising-picnic Last weekend we took part in the Carlota Galgos Rescue Canada First Annual Fundraising Picnic. We held mini photo shoots with a number of dogs and get to know quite a few of the owners.

Carlota Galgos Rescue Canada is dedicated to supporting the rescue efforts of the Spanish Galgos (a breed of Greyhound) from their lives as hunting dogs in Spain.

Talking with the owners and organizers gave us a real insight into the dog breed and the unimaginable treatment they often experience. What left an even deeper impression was the incredible dedication of everyone involved to help rescue these dogs.

Stanley https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2017/8/stanley-photo-shoot British Bulldogs are awesome and Stanley is the Ambassador of Awesome.

Five years old and in complete charge, Stanley knows what he likes and he likes things just so. Among the things he's not particluarly fond of are cameras, especially when they're pointed in his direction. It was no wonder he was a bit shy at the beginning of the session.

It didn't take long before Stanley got more comfortable. By the time we went outdoors, he was his usual happy-go-lucky self.

By the time we returned home, Stanley had clearly had his fill of modelling and was ready for a nice relaxing tea and cookie (water and dog treat).

Thank you Stanley and thank you Gordon for the chance to spend time with such a great guy.

Lucy https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2016/12/Lucy Question: How do you spend an hour sitting in the snow without noticing the passage of time?

Answer: Lucy

On Sunday, despite the lingering cold temperatures, we set out for a session with Lucy, a ten year old Wheaten Terrier

I don't know if it's the breed or her individual personality, but she was a wonder to work with: easy going, adaptable and eager to please (after all, a photo shoot is uncharted territory for a dog no matter how much one prepares!).

We were told that Lucy loves people; what an understatement! It took her absolutely no time to adjust to us when we arrived. We may as well have been family (home made treats probably helped).

Lucy loved running through the drifts when called (OK, treats helped a bit) and she was more than happy to pose with family members and friends who dropped by.

Thanks to Isabel for the invitation to photograph Lucy. We were extra pleased to be able to speed up our usual process and deliver the pictures in time for Christmas.

Greyhounds abound! https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2016/7/greyhounds-abound At the annual GSNCR Picnic

We are proud to have had the opportunity to support our local Greyhound rescue group by taking portraits at the 2016 annual picnic.

Many thanks to Wendy, Jennifer and the organizers of the picnic. We were surprised and grateful to have a tent set up for us when we arrived - it was a very hot day and this made it much more bearable.

We had a great time photographing the dogs. After being exposed to so many Greyhounds at once, we both have a deeper appreciation for the breed and for the humans who care for them.

Greyhound family photo shoot https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2016/6/greyhound-family-photo-shoot We were recently invited by Anne and Chris to do a shoot of their family, including their three Greyhounds. The shoot began in the back yard where we spent time getting familiar with the dogs and taking opportunities for photos wherever we could find them. The hounds were very cooperative.

Being such a beautiful Spring morning, we then headed to some nearby green space. We found several excellent spots along the paths and in the woods for portraits  - sadly the mosquitoes had also found the best spot, making our time there a little shorter than we might have liked.

The focus of this shoot was the entire “pack”, but it was impossible to resist these  dogs:

 Alice

 Jeep

George

These are very happy dogs and we thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them.

Thank you Ann and Chris!

Rosie, a four month old Bernedoodle, was the star of our latest photo session. She's a very happy, energetic bundle of fur. She was very excited to meet us and was not the least bit shy or nervous around the cameras. She took quite a shine to Iwona, and it wasn't because she was carrying treats. In fact, we brought our usual supply of goodies to the shoot, but it seems Rosie is motivated by fun more than anything else.

The shoot began in Rosie's back yard and we moved to a nearby park. The morning was getting progressively warmer, so when we returned to the house, the pool was uncovered to let the kids cool off. Rosie is not a big swimmer yet, but I suspect that will change.

Many thanks to Matt, Shannon, Jackson and Ethan for being so accommodating and patient throughout the morning.

Shady Photo Shoot https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2015/7/shady-photo-shoot We had the pleasure of meeting Shady this past weekend. Shady, a 9 year old Labrador/Boxer/Pit Bull mix, is a sweet, loving dog with all the energy and enthusiasm of a puppy. Along with his family - Shauna, Trevor and Cameron – we spent a truly enjoyable morning at the park chasing balls, running through the splash pads, and taking plenty of breaks in the shade on what was quickly becoming a fairly hot day.

Shady’s eagerness and fun-loving personality was quick to show itself. As soon as Shauna launched his favourite ball, Shady took off like a cannonball across the park. He was so swift that I had to immediately adjust my technique for taking action shots.

Shady loves the water, and though there was no nearby opportunity for swimming, we did manage to take advantage of the splash pads in the park.

We had some quiet moments as well and Shady was more than happy to pose for some portrait shots.

Many thanks to Shauna, Trevor and Cameron for a great day!

Yoko Photo Shoot https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2015/6/yoko-photo-shoot On June 6, we had the pleasure of meeting Yoko, a 3 month old Golden Doodle.

Yoko‘s sweet temperament is matched only by her cuteness. Her energy, as with most puppies, is boundless. She is gently curious about everyone and everything, including other dogs, cats, even flying bugs. She was happy to get so much attention (and treats) and it was clear that Yoko is going to be a very loving and faithful dog.

Although it could have been the treats in my pocket, Yoko seemed to take a bit of a shine to me. She was crawling all over me as I lay on the ground trying to get a shot, nipping at my ears and my clothes. It required some effort on my part to concentrate on taking photos and to resist spending the morning just playing.

We’re looking forward to the next shoot when Yoko is fully grown.

Thanks Nadia for a wonderful morning with Yoko!

Poppy photo shoot https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2015/6/poppy-photo-shoot Poppy is an extremely happy and expressive 8 year old Airedale/Collie mix. We expected her to be a bit shy at our first meeting, but she accepted us right away and was more than eager to show us her best side.

Saturday was an unusually hot spring day, with temperatures in the high twenties, so we kept our outdoor activities to a minimum. After some time playing in the back yard, we took a short walk to a nearby park, then back to the yard where Poppy cooled off with the water sprinkler.

It was a fantastic day. Thanks to Shelly and Bill for a opening up their home and family to us.

Dog Photography Tips: Scout your location https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2015/4/dog-photography-tips-part-1-scout-your-location During our first few shoots it became obvious that when photographing a pet at someone’s home, or in unfamiliar surroundings, it's crucial that you take your time looking around the location. Everything you see is “background” in your shot, so look for any objects or scenes that could be a distraction in the photos (garbage bins, cars, hydro poles, telephone wires, etc.).

This photo of Soya Bean racing around the yard would be much better without the distraction of the garbage bin, an easy bit of background to move before starting the shoot.

Soya Bean-322Soya Bean-322

Where possible, remove or disguise potential distractions. On the other hand, look for ideal back-drops that would enhance the photo by giving the location meaningful context (eg. an urban location) or by aiding in focusing on the dog (a blank or uniform background (sky, grass, trees, etc.)

Tyson Shoot https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2015/2/tyson-shoot Last week we had our first winter shoot. We expected to have a great model in Tyson, and our only concern was the weather. Would it be blisteringly cold as it had been during the past weeks? As it turned out, it was a bit chilly but there was a light snow and no wind; some sunshine would have been a bonus but the conditions were great.

We spend an excellent morning chasing Tyson around Strathcona Park. He's a real charmer. He loves to play, chase his toy, and engage with other friends. He's great with people, which made our job kind of easy.

Many thanks to Anika and Mike for freeing up their time for the Tyson shoot. And props go out to Natasha for helping set the whole thing up.

First post - First photo shoot https://www.wetmutt.ca/blog/2014/8/first-post Session #1

We held our first photo session on Sunday, at the home of Soya Bean in Hull, Quebec. It was a beautiful day, perfect for outdoor shots.

Part Labrador, part Border Collie, Soya is an energetic dog, very tuned in to her surroundings and to her owner.  We couldn’t have asked for a better dog to work with our first time out!

Everything went smoothly despite some opening jitters. I dropped the camera bag within the first 10 minutes of arriving, which startled the dog, and made her a little leery of me the entire time. She was happy and engaged throughout the session, but I think she would have been more comfortable had I not made that startling noise right from the start.
